Prague from above: A photo essay

It’s been five months since I visited Prague and I’m still trying to figure out how best to describe it in words. “Magical” and “fairy tale” come to mind the most. This city of charming vistas and spectacular panoramas, at times, made me feel as if I was transported to a different era and even a different realm. The sensation was especially prevalent when viewing the city from above, as we did more than once during our time in Prague. Rather than continuing to struggle to find the words to describe the wonder that is Prague, I am hoping these views of the city from above will do the explaining.

I visited Prague 10 years ago and took many pictures that by today’s standards are pretty awful. Nice to see these gorgeous photos of this amazing city. They do much better justice than my old pics. I long to go back and of course drink their fantastic beer.

Thanks for the kind words, Ted. The beer in Prague is incredible and cheaper than bottled water. Can’t go wrong there.

I visited Prague 7 years ago but only for a day or two, so I hardly remember it. I hope to go back at the end of March with my best friend—and these pictures are getting me even more excited!

Beautiful photos, Francesca! I have wanted to visit Prague for so long that I worry a little that I have built it up in my mind so much that I may be disappointed when I finally get there – then I see a post like this and I’m convinced again that it will be magical!

I’ve been disappointed by cities I dreamed of visiting (Florence comes to mind) so I, too, was a little nervous about visiting Prague. I did not want to be let down and I wasn’t. Prague is everything it’s hyped up to be.

Great photos! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been to Prague very, very long time ago, and just wandered the streets. I do hope you will write a longer post about Prague, with tips for visiting and more photos.

Oh you know Prague holds a special place in our hearts– its where we got engaged. I LOVE this city from every angle but a view from above is extra special. I never did make it up its many spiral stairs, I was lazy. But we elevator up one restaurant to enjoy a beer and a great view of the clock! Hehehe..

Great job in capturing the magic of Prague! My husband and I were just in Prague – and we used the word “magical” a lot while we were there, too.

    • Francesca October 3, 2014 at 10:33 pm #

“Magical” is so fitting when it comes to Prague! “Fairy tale” comes to mind a lot, too.

Lovely shots – I spent my birthday in Prague a couple of years back and spent lots of time photographing the city from above too, I think they were my best shots (not least as it was packed with people back on ground level!)

    • Francesca October 4, 2014 at 11:24 am #

Those rooftops and colorful buildings just beg to be photographed, no?

  12. the lazy travelers September 24, 2014 at 10:28 am #

when we went on our tour of prague last summer, our guide told us that the absolute best way to see prague was from above. (we might argue that it’s inside one of its many bars, drinking czech beer, but heeeey, to each his own). it’s definitely a stunning, beautiful, magical city and you captured it perfectly! xo

    • Francesca October 4, 2014 at 11:54 am #

Thank you, daaahhhlings! While your guide knows what he was talking about, I pretty much agree with you, too. Drinking Czech beer and absorbing the city that way was one of the best things to do.

Beautiful shots! I love seeing big cities from above after I’ve had time to walk around and get acquainted with the layout. It’s so fun to see everything from a different perspective and point out the places we had walked before. I hope to make it to Prague one day, too!

    • Francesca October 4, 2014 at 11:54 am #

Thank you so much, Cassandra! I can’t recommend Prague enough.

  14. Cathy Sweeney September 25, 2014 at 11:51 pm #

Fantastic photos — I love Prague and have been lucky enough to visit twice. It really is magical — that’s a great word for it and your pics convey that well. Both times we’ve been there has been in December in the time for the Christmas markets — talk about magical!

Gotta love those red roofs! When I lived in Poland, I got to visit Prague three or four time, it was that close. I haven’t been back since, but it’s overdue. Every time I see an article about the city, I realize that I do miss it… Great shots, FF!

We aren’t ones to climb towers or high vantage points for the views below (Stacey is afraid of heights) but you show us with this what we would be missing if we skipped something like going up the Old Town Hall Tower.

Heh. Mark is afraid of heights, too, but he’s done quite well on our travels, climbing to the tops of towers, waterfalls, and the like. He didn’t feel so well, though, when we rode the Ferris wheel in Vienna…

So happy to hear that, Stephanie! Prague in spring was lovely; a little cool, but I imagine the crowds were smaller than they would be in warmer months. You’re going to love it there!
