Traverse City, Michigan, is my happy place and it was calling me back.
I had the chance to take a weekend trip earlier this month and I thought it would be fun to make it a “Mom & Me” Weekend. We don’t get to have too many of those in our family so we set the plans in motion. “Mom & Me” Weekend was a go – except, this time, I wasn’t the “Mom”; I was the “me”.
I invited my mom to join me at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, figuring it would be my Mother’s Day gift to her. We’d relax, drink some wine, and I’d treat her to some time at the spa. Believe me, there is no better place to do all of the above than at Grand Traverse.
Mom and I arrived on Friday evening, much later than I’d hoped to. It was too late to enjoy dinner at one of the resort’s restaurants, and I was disappointed that it was too dark to explore the expansive grounds. I was tired from the drive but got a little boost of energy when I saw how lively and hoppin’ the lobby was. There were groups having some cocktails at the bar and others were waiting for the shuttle van to go to nearby Turtle Creek Casino. It almost made me want to stick around for a drink or two. Almost. I’m not one to pass up a cocktail, especially when traveling without my kids, but I had some wine-tasting planned for the next day. So, Mom and I found our way to our room and called it a night. (There will be more about the wine-tasting in another post, I promise!)
It was such a luxury to have the comfortable bed all to myself, and to have a full night of uninterrupted sleep. I woke the next morning refreshed and ready to go. Mother Nature tried to dampen the mood with cold temperatures, rain, and gray skies, but I didn’t let her affect my spirit. Wine-tasting in the rain is still wine-tasting, right? Mom was less excited about the notion so she opted to take advantage of the free shuttle and try her luck at the casino instead. Clearly, she and I have different ideas and priorities when it comes to fun and relaxation, and lucky for us that Grand Traverse Resort and Spa offers so many options for its guests.
After a full day of wine-tasting, dining, socializing, and beer-drinking for me, and many hours at the casino for Mom, it felt so wonderful to return to Grand Traverse and sink into that comfortable bed once again. I fell asleep that night with a smile on my face, knowing that the following morning would bring with it a visit to the spa.
The spa at Grand Traverse Resort covers two floors and 7,000 square feet and includes twenty-three treatment rooms. Prior to my visit, I studied the full service spa menu and struggled with choosing a treatment for myself. What a horrible problem to have to deal with, right? I couldn’t decide; it was between the 50-minute deep tissue massage and the stress relief body wrap. Ultimately, I went with the body wrap; the promise of some stress relief really appealed to this full-time working mama! For my own mama, I booked the 50-minute relaxation massage as an early Mother’s Day gift.
With to-go coffee from the resort’s Marketplace in my hand, I leisurely wound my way down the stairs to the spa on the lower level. I was greeted promptly and warmly by reception staff and check-in lasted mere seconds. Downstairs, I was greeted by another staff member who gave me instructions on how to operate the complimentary lockers in the women’s changing room; introduced me to the amenities on offer; and provided me with slippers and a warm, fluffy robe. I undressed, donned the robe and slippers, and made my way into the soothing, quiet, and warm waiting area, where I continued to enjoy my coffee and the silence.
I heard my name being gently called and I snapped out of my daydream. The massage therapist was ready for me. Once in the treatment room, the therapist explained how the body wrap would work: it begins with a full-body massage, followed by being wrapped in warm towels that have been steeped in a hot, herbal bath, and completed with a scalp and face massage. The therapist asked if I had any problem areas that might require a bit more attention or pressure (yes and please), and left me to disrobe and get comfortable on the table. What happened next was mostly forty-five minutes of extreme bliss. The massage provided some relief for my achy muscles and was rendered with the perfect amount of pressure. I did not know what to expect of the wrap, since this was my first such experience, but it turned out to be soothing and relaxing and something I’d definitely do again. My only complaint is that the time went by way too quickly (isn’t that always the case?); the stress relief body wrap treatment, sadly, was over before I knew it.
What a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning! After Mom’s massage, she said she was completely relaxed and that it was the best massage she’s ever had (and the woman has had her share of professional massages). Hearing that from her, and knowing that Mom enjoyed herself the day before at the casino, assured me that our “Mom & Me” Weekend was a success. Being in Traverse City while having such a good time with Mom was just the icing on the cake. Perhaps we shall make it an annual event.
Mom and I were guests of Grand Traverse Resort and Spa and of Traverse City Tourism. My spa visit was complimentary and Mom’s was provided at a reduced rate. All words and thoughts are, as always, my own.
