Where to stay in Traverse City, Michigan: Cherry Tree Inn & Suites

Traverse City, Michigan, has long been a favorite travel destination for Midwest families. With the abundance of lodging options, ranging from popular hotel chains to private home rentals, it can be difficult to decide on where to stay in Traverse City. I’m here to make that decision a bit easier for you with my recommendation of Cherry Tree Inn & Suites.

Beachfront hotel

Traverse City is a year-round destination and the Lake Michigan shores are a main draw regardless of the season. Cherry Tree Inn & Suites has 400 feet of private beach access on the East Arm of Grand Traverse Bay. Adirondack lounge chairs are available for guests, as well as fire pits and a playground for the kids. In summer, guests can rent water equipment from Blue Sky Rentals which operates right on Cherry Tree Inn & Suites’ beach. Offerings include ski boats, pontoons, jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks.

Studios and suites

I have argued that the best accommodations for traveling families are private rentals, whether it’s an apartment or a house. The conveniences are undeniable. But in a place like Traverse City where most visitors want that immediate beach access, you really can’t go wrong at Cherry Tree Inn & Suites. It’s a full-service hotel with all the conveniences of a private rental, plus that desirable beach frontage (and then some). It really is the best of both worlds.

Cherry Tree Inn & Suites features a total of 76 fully-equipped studios and suites. Each room has a kitchenette with a microwave and refrigerator, approximately 10 of which have 2-burner cooktops (one suite has a full oven). Even though Traverse City boasts some amazing dining options, it is possible to save a few bucks and make your own meals in your room. At the very least, have some snacks, milk, and breakfast items on hand for the kids (and some of that outstanding local beer and wine for Mom and Dad).

In-room amenities

In addition to the convenient kitchen amenities, Cherry Tree Inn & Suites provides guests with more fantastic in-room amenities. Again, depending on the studio or suite, certain features will vary. However, all rooms are equipped with free Wifi; iPad/iPhone docking stations; flat-screen TVs with HD cable; single-cup coffeemakers with Seattle’s Best Coffee and Tazo Teas; and Sony PlayStation 2 Video Game Systems.

Lake Michigan Studio

During my stay at Cherry Tree Inn & Suites, I enjoyed the comfort of the Lake Michigan Studio. I was treated to 661 square feet of relaxing luxury, with my own private balcony looking out onto the bay. The Lake Michigan Studio also features a king bed, sleeper sofa, fireplace, and 2-person jacuzzi tub. It’s perfect for couples or families with one or two kids (who don’t mind sharing a bed!). There’s also a TV mirror in the bathroom. I loved being able to catch up on sports scores as I brushed my teeth in the morning and watching Law & Order: SVU while I got ready to go out in the evenings!

Additional hotel amenities

As if the beach and lakefront aren’t enough, there is an outdoor pool (open seasonally), an indoor pool (open year-round), an indoor hot tub (open 24 hours), and an outdoor hot tub (open year-round during scheduled times). Cherry Tree Inn & Suites provides complimentary breakfast daily for all guests, as well as complimentary shuttle service to downtown Traverse City (10 minutes away), Turtle Creek Casino, and Cherry Capital Airport.

The shuttle into downtown is a game-changer, especially for guests who want to sample the local beers and wines and/or have a few cocktails, and not have to worry about driving back. During busy times, the shuttle operates on a set schedule to pre-determined downtown destinations. During slower periods, however, it’s pretty much on-demand, similar to Uber. I took advantage of the complimentary shuttle a few times during my stay and found it to be not only convenient but informative. Charity, one of the shuttle drivers, is a veritable fountain of knowledge when it comes to dining in Traverse City. I had some extraordinary drinks and meals in Traverse City thanks to Charity’s recommendations! (Perhaps I should get her to guest post about where to eat and drink in Traverse City…)

My family loves Traverse City; it really is a special place to us. I know we will return at some point in the near future and I would not hesitate to stay at Cherry Tree Inn & Suites again.

Big thank you to Cherry Tree Inn & Suites for hosting me during my stay in Traverse City. All words and opinions here are, as always, 100% my own.

I love water front hotels, and that pool overlooking the water looks amazing! I’ve never been to Michigan but I hear Lake Michigan is the place to go. I’ll definitely keep this hotel in mind, it looks like it’s in the perfect spot.
